Record-Breaking Spending Predicted in Montana Senate Showdown

Date: April 16, 2024 Steve Daines

The stakes are high in the Montana Senate race as Democratic incumbent Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy gear up for what is predicted to be one of the most expensive Senate contests in Montana’s history. Fundraising efforts on both sides have already hinted at an unprecedented spend, signaling a fiercely competitive race ahead.

Since the commencement of the 2023 election cycle, Sen. Jon Tester has amassed nearly $28.7 million in campaign funds, showcasing his significant support and fundraising capabilities. On the other side, Tim Sheehy, a newcomer to the political scene, has not lagged far behind, securing $8.4 million for his campaign. A notable portion of Sheehy’s funds comes from personal contributions and loans, underscoring his commitment to this race.

The escalation in campaign spending is not new to Montana’s political landscape, but this year’s race is on track to surpass previous records. The 2018 Senate race set a precedent with over $63 million in spending, only to be dwarfed by the 2020 race, which saw an astonishing expenditure of $160 million. With the current trajectory, the 2023 Senate race between Tester and Sheehy is expected to break these records, marking a new milestone in Montana’s political history.
